Every kitchen should have a knife block. This block is designed to hold a number of small knives as well as large ones and most also have a space for scissors. This is a very convenient and safe place to keep them stored when not in use.
There are often questions as to the best place to put one of these blocks. Some people prefer them near the kitchen stove, others prefer them on the counter. In either case, this makes the knives within a easy reach and keeps the person cooking from having to walk back and forth between work spaces.
These blocks come with slots for steak knives, large knives and scissors. This keeps these items from lying loosely in a drawer. Sharp knives, lying in a drawer are an invitation to disaster. Over time, particles fall in the drawer and are attracted to the knife blades. This can collect bacteria and, if the skin is pierced, lead to a serious infection.
The block is arranged to prevent danger from cutting a finger or hand when removing a knife. It has small slots in the front for steak knives and large slots in the back for the larger ones. The handles are upright at all times, which makes them safe and easy to remove for use.
The wooden blocks are very heavy which is a great advantage as they set quite easily on the counter and there is no danger of them tipping over. This avoids the danger of falling over and spilling the knives on the counter or the floor. While they are heavy enough not to tip, they are still light enough to move easily.
A knife block helps keep a kitchen neat and clean as it fits very nicely in any location and blends in with the rest of the kitchen. With the numerous different colors and designs on the market it is very easy to locate one that will match the kitchen decor. The safe location of the knives should be primary if there are children in the house.
